Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for Carpenter

1. Task Description

  • Detailed description of the carpentry work to be performed (e.g., framing, roofing, flooring installation, etc.)

2. Location of Work

  • Specify where the carpentry work will take place (e.g., construction site, residential home, etc.)

3. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Hard hat
  • Steel-toed boots
  • Safety goggles
  • Hearing protection
  • High-visibility clothing
  • Gloves
  • Dust mask (if working with power tools or materials generating dust)

4. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

  • Manual Handling: Risk of injury while lifting heavy materials.

    • Control Measures: Use correct lifting techniques, team lifting, use mechanical aids such as a trolley.
  • Falls from Height: Risk when working on scaffolding or ladders.

    • Control Measures: Ensure scaffolding is secure, use fall arrest systems, and proper ladder placement.
  • Power Tool Hazards: Risk of cuts, electric shock, or injury from moving parts of tools.

    • Control Measures: Inspect tools before use, use appropriate guards, follow operating instructions.
  • Noise Exposure: Prolonged exposure to loud machinery and tools.

    • Control Measures: Use hearing protection, limit exposure time, ensure compliance with noise regulations.
  • Dust Exposure: Risk of respiratory issues from inhaling dust from materials like wood or concrete.

    • Control Measures: Use dust extraction systems, wear a dust mask, ensure proper ventilation.

5. Procedure for Safe Work Practice

  • Ensure all workers have been trained on the use of tools and equipment.
  • Inspect worksite for hazards (e.g., uneven surfaces, power lines, etc.).
  • Set up a safe work zone, ensuring all equipment is in good working order.
  • Conduct a pre-work briefing with all involved personnel.
  • Follow proper procedures for cutting, drilling, and fastening materials.
  • Maintain a tidy work environment to avoid trips or falls.

6. Emergency Procedures

  • First Aid: Have a first aid kit accessible at all times and ensure at least one worker is trained in first aid.

10. Review and Sign-Off

  • All workers must sign off on the SWMS to acknowledge they understand the hazards, risks, and control measures.
  • Supervisor to review and approve the SWMS before work begins.
